イギリスの動物愛護団体 ＰＥＴＡよりガメラ撮影中での虐待行為について意見を頂きました。

ガメラのことは正直ショックでした。初めてこの件が持ち上がったときはまず事実を確認するのが最初の仕事だと思いました。続々出てくる獣医他ショップ関係者の証言、写真、ウエブサイトにブログ・・・。これは事実であることを世間に知らしめるには十分と判断したので、アメリカで動物の生きる権利を主張することを目的に設立された世界規模で活動するＰＥＴＡに連絡をとりました。最近ではポールマッカートニーがコメントをしたことで有名です。パメラ・アンダーソンほかハリウッドにも多数会員を有するこの団体に意見を求めました。
残念ながら亡くなったカメ達はもう救いようがありません。ただ、甲羅に穴をあけられたカメは幸いまだ生きています。もし次のガメラでまた同じような扱いを受けるカメがいたらカメを愛する一個人としてそれは許せません。文化としてカメを食べる国民がいることも、カメ製品で生計を立てる民族がいることも承知しています。私が今問題にしているのは、ペットとして輸入、繁殖され日本国内で売買され映画撮影の目的のために犠牲になったであろうカメに関しての言及です。
手紙では事実を決して誇張することなく、次の三点を述べました。
＊ 映画撮影のために甲羅に穴を開けられたケヅメリクガメの幼体が展示されていた事実とその写真数枚(修正があるかどうかをまず現像所に提出し、その後に証拠として添付)
＊ 関係者の証言から、幼体が何匹も死んでしまった可能性
＊ 撮影中に十分な管理（保温など）をされていなかった可能性

Thank you for contacting PETA about tortoises used in the film Gamera. You are right to be upset by the callous use of animals, and your e-mail has been forwarded to the appropriate staff members. There is no excuse for mistreating or depicting the mistreatment of animals for the sake of entertainment and ratings, and we hope you will take a moment to voice your objections to the CEO of their distribution company. It is vital that he or she hears from motivated individual viewers like yourself in addition to hearing from animal rights organizations like PETA.

The American Humane Association (AHA) has a list of guidelines that filming studios are supposed to follow in order to get the AHA's approval. However, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals believes that no animals should be used in any entertainment filming.
Commonly, animals are corralled or caged in unfamiliar terrain, exposed to changes in temperature, and exposed to other animals not part of their herd or family, which causes hormonal disturbances and mental anguish. The manner in which they are rounded up, trucked and trailored, and kept on the set can be upsetting physically and mentally.
Please speak out against the use of animals for entertainment. A brief letter may be all it takes to initiate awareness and more compassionate filming. Thanks again for contacting us and for all your efforts to help animals!
